BODA SKINS was founded with the aim to slow fashion down. We chose to design and create timeless pieces that fit like a second skin and last a lifetime. Items that you wear as you go about everyday life. There with you through every story, every memory and every occasion. With you through the highs, the lows and everything in between. Items that you cherish, forever. At the heart of BODA SKINS, our mission is to reduce our carbon footprint & waste through responsible leather sourcing and improved manufacturing processes. Our Sustainability Strategy will aim to bring positive change in order to secure our responsibility for a brighter future. We want to be transparent with you; this is just the beginning of a more sustainable BODA SKINS. We want to reduce and offset our carbon emissions and consciously work towards a greener future for generations to come. We know we're not perfect yet, but we’re working on it.

By working together, we all have the power to positively impact our future.

WHERE WE ARE NOW:

We strive for sustainability throughout all of our products. From the materials sourced and used to the many types of processes - we try our hardest to limit our impact on the planet. We produce high quality products that are designed to withstand the test of time, and last you a lifetime. By doing this, each individual customer is helping to significantly reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion and waste. All of our jackets are handcrafted in artisan mills and, where possible, all of our materials are ethically sourced.

Leather + Shearling.
We are currently working with our suppliers to develop our first jacket using chrome free, vegetable tanning, which is due to be released in a few months. Chrome free tanning can be further classified as mineral and vegetable based where the tannins are derived from plants and all leathers are used as a bi product of the food industry. This sustainable process avoids the use of any harmful chemicals and reduces any environmental impact and the need for water resources to achieve entirely biodegradable products.

Outerwear + Puffers.
We have developed our current Nylon Down Puffer using the finest Responsible Down Standard (RDS) Certified fill. The combination of down (90%) and feather (10%) provides lightness, warmth, moisture absorption and breathability. The RDS is an independent, voluntary Global Standard that ensures the down and feathers that we use come from humanely treated animals.

Undergarments.
The latest items to join our jersey offering are from the 530 collection. This collection is handcrafted from 100% organic cotton that is Global Textile Standard (GOTS) certified. GOTS is the highest global organic standard and it ensures the organic status of textiles, from the harvesting of the raw materials through to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing.

We get it, fashion and opinions change over time. And every now and again you probably look in your wardrobe and think ‘I couldn’t pull that off’ or ‘what was I thinking?’. That's why, in February 2021, we are introducing the BODA Buyback initiative. This new initiative presents the opportunity to buy and sell pre-loved BODA jackets back to us. By buying and selling pre-loved items, you are giving it a second lease at life. This form of recycling massively reduces production and waste.

The leather that we use is a bi-product of the food industry and therefore one of the oldest forms of recycling. The majority of our hides are dyed using a vegetable dye which has a lower impact on the environment. We are currently working with 1 ‘Green Factory’ and we have ensured that all jersey items are GOTS certified. We also ensure the down used to fill our Puffer jackets is Responsible Down Standard certified. Not all of our factories have these certifications, and so we are working with our current suppliers to improve their production in order to gain these certifications and to be more environmentally friendly.

We are partnering with Eco Cart to empower the BODA SKINS community to make their orders 100% carbon neutral. For every one of our amazing items that ships, you now have the choice to offset the specific carbon footprint from your order with a positive environmental impact. This means the full carbon emissions from producing, manufacturing, and shipping your new BODA product to your door would be completely neutralized.

So, when a BODA SKINS package arrives at your door, you’ll get something you love and you’ll be proud of the fact that you’re taking a small step towards making a big change in the world.

- What does it mean to offset emissions?

It means that for any carbon emissions released into our atmosphere as a result of manufacturing and shipping items at BODA SKINS, we invest in projects that reduce carbon emissions by the same amount. It’s almost like we’re giving the planet an IOU, then immediately paying it back.

- How does it work?

Each time someone checks the carbon neutral box when checking out on BODA SKINS, we will automatically purchase verified emissions reductions, more commonly known as “offsets” through our friends at EcoCart. These purchases support environmental projects, like wind and solar farms that create clean energy, or protecting trees that would otherwise be cut down so that they can continue to absorb carbon from the air. On top of it, we make sure that these projects are doing some extra good like protecting animals or supporting underserved communities.

- Why is this important?

We have always been conscious of our impact and actively work to lighten our carbon footprint. We believe that if we all work together towards positive change, we can make the world a cleaner, healthier place.

- What do you mean carbon neutral?

When we say your orders will be “carbon neutral” (“net zero” is another term you’ll hear), that means that we will eliminate, capture, or otherwise mitigate all of the carbon emissions created from making our products and shipping them to your door.

We’ll even give you information about the project your specific donation is supporting, so you know your money is going to the right place.

We host our website with Shopify and use their service ShopPay to process most of the payments through our stores. All orders that are processed using ShopPay are automatically offset for Carbon through Shopify’s Sustainability Fund. Shopify invests $5M annually in the most promising solutions to fight climate change. Their goal is to help prove, scale, and commercialise climate technology for massive impact in the long term. Commerce and entrepreneurship can only thrive in the long term if our planet thrives too and Shopify’s Sustainability Fund invests to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to help just that.

WHAT WE’RE ACTIVELY WORKING ON:

Offsetting our Carbon Footprint further.
As an eCommerce brand, we are aware of the number of shipments that we send out and receive on a daily basis. With the help of our partnership with Eco Cart, we are able to offer you the chance to offset the shipment for your order, however we want to do more. We want to offset the carbon emissions for each and every shipment that we send out and also receive from not only our customers, but also from our suppliers.

Product Development.
By taking small steps, we can all begin to affect big change. Every piece of clothing goes through dozens of processes - and they all have an effect on our planet. Here at BODA SKINS, there are still plenty of ways we can play a part in limiting our own environmental impact through using sustainably sourced materials from certified leathers to alternative fabrications and technologies.

Leather + Shearling.
We are constantly working with our Leather + Shearling suppliers to improve every step of the production process through traceability, chemical transparency and chrome free non hazardous tanning, to ensure that our products and hardware are durable enough to last you a lifetime. Within this development, we are exploring new fabrics and techniques and only working with certified green factories to ensure that every step of our production meets the highest standards of environmental performance.

Outerwear / Puffers.
Our commitment to sustainability is rapidly growing and we are ever passionate about developing materials that help our products perform their best, last for years and reduce environmental impact. We are looking into innovative solutions for our materials including regen recycled nylons made from pre-consumer waste. This material reaches 100% Global Recycled Standard certification and also conserves petroleum resources. Partnering with globally recognised brands that are pioneering in offering environmentally friendly solutions, including fibres that are made from alternative recycled PET bottles, to achieve maximum comfort whilst achieving the best insulation proprietary technologies.

Undergarments.
We are further developing different fabrics, dying techniques and washes across our jersey collection. We are continuing to work with our supplier to ensure that all of our jersey items reach the Global Organic Textile Standard by containing organic fibres, using a minimum chemical input and being processed with the least possible environmental impact.

Packaging.
Our goal is to have zero waste packaging. We put an enormous amount of work into changing the smallest details to ensure sustainability is embedded in our business. We are actively improving our packaging by using more sustainable, reusable materials such as using recycled cardboard - you’ll start to see them later this year.  We are working on multi functional options that extend the life of our transit packaging to consumer use.

Suppliers.
As we continue to grow, we are very selective with any new factories that we work with. Our aim is to be working with a range of factories who are all ‘Green factory’ certified and part of the Leather Working Group. These are like minded factories who share our vision, our values and who care for the environment. We are also working with our current suppliers to improve their production and waste reduction in order to gain these certifications. By reducing waste reduction, we will be reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. To do this, we will cut hides down to size before tanning so that we only process what we actually use. We are also going to only transport usable leather from the tanneries to the factories, by doing both of these we will be reducing our leather waste.

We also aim to ship all shipments from our factories to us, via sea freight. Shipping via boat provides lower energy consumption and emissions of products harmful to the environment than land transport or air transport. Maritime transport is and will probably remain for a long time the least polluting mode of transport per tonne of goods transported over long distances, so we are working towards ensuring that all shipments we receive are sent via the sea.

Innovation.
We  think outside the box, where we focus on the company’s efforts in improving the entire value chain. We look to use best practices around tanning, where we will aim to reduce waste, water, energy and chemical use in the leather supply chain to treat the material. Using improved tanning methods, metal free initiatives and up-cycling waste leather and textiles that are generated during the production process.

Designing Sustainably.
We work with many of our best selling shapes, updating them slightly season to season. We never follow short term trends, we want our pieces to feel relevant for many years to come. We also continually educate our customers on how to care for their products, we want them to show their items lots of love, so they can age beautifully.

The effects of climate change are magnified far beyond BODA SKINS itself. The only way we can truly begin to reverse the effects is if everyone does their part. So please, take a second to ask yourself one question;

Could I be doing more to help save our planet?

As we said, we’re building a brand that we're proud of. One that our future generations will be proud of too.
